DIRECTOR’S STATMENT

Grief and I have known each other for a long time. It often, almost always, seeps into my writing whether it be a poem, script, or short story.Admittedly, this script, There Are Flowers Outside The Door, was born out of a deep loneliness and longing for love that I could only akin with grief.

However, shortly after writing it, it took a different form when someone I loved dearly died. The lighting and mood of this film are based on one of the most visually and emotionally dark days of my life.

Grief and love are, in my opinion, two things every person will experience. Once it is in your heart, it never truly leaves.

And unfortunately, sometimes it is haunting.

the story

Taylor has died. Her girlfriend Meg now lives in an

environment soaked in grief. Every corner of their home

reminds Meg of who she once shared it with. The memories

of their relationship, both positive and negative, haunt her.

7

look & feel

There is duality happening. With the story, the lighting, the characters.

All Meg wants is Taylor. The grief binds her to their memories but the grief is suffocating and overwhelming. She would have spent eternity with Taylor, but she can’t bear the THOUGHT of spending a life in a home haunted by her memory.

Taylor has died - Yet, THE VERSION of her that resides now only in Meg’s mind is filled with love and light.

Their home is Taylor and she took the light with her.

Taylor is the best thing that ever happened to Meg,and her death was the worst.Yet, there is not one without the other.Taylor’s life and death are forever intertwined.

lighting

There is a duality in the lighting

geometric design elements

Soft blue. It is dark. It is grief. The light from the window illuminates the

room.

It is like being in dark blue water and seeing the sun.

All scenes with Taylor will have a bright lighting, as if she is a light source herself.

casting

MEG

Meg has recently graduated from college with a 4.0 in something science-oriented. She is originally from a small town and moved here for school. When she first moved here she struggled to make friends but that changed when she met Taylor during her junior year. She is incredibly close with her family. Yet, she seems to isolate when she’s facing a difficulty rather than ask for help. She is a hopeless romantic who has always dreamed of getting married. She is known for being incredibly hard on herself and is often referred to as a perfectionist.

TAYLOR

Taylor recently graduated from college with a business degree. She had the goal of working in social media marketing. She was originally from a big city. She went to a large high school and was a cheerleader. She had always been popular, charismatic, and outgoing. She had also always been humble and kind, standing up for anyone and everyone. She had THE desire to be a perfectionist but was often disorganized and running late. She was an only child and had a strained relationship with her mother, but they had been recently mending it. She developed a fear of abandonment when her father walked out on their family. Despite this, she always dreamed of getting married and becoming a mother.

performance

There are only two roles in this film.

Taylor and Meg. Taylor is alive, bright and in love. Meg is broken, entrenched in

grief, AND in love. Past Meg, without the knowledge of what is to come for her, also

makes an appearance.

How do you look face to face with so much pain, and invite it in?

How do you know when it'll be the last time you step into a place?

The last time you were with someone?

Shouldn’t we get to know,

Don’t we deserve to be told?

I’m not sure if I would have done it differently

If I would have lingered deliberately

Or stayed by you indefinitely

But you're gone

And’ I'm here

And I wish I was still there

Still in that last moment with you

Right before I turned to walk away

Right before you said goodbye to me

Did I tell you I love you?

Did I even need to?

I didn’t know,

If only I had known
